Dan Alspach is one of pokers more colorful characters. His usual poker attire is typical tourist wear, loud Hawaiian shirts and multi-coloured sun visors. This gives the impression that Alspach is only playing poker for enjoyment but he is an experienced campaigner who thrives on gullible players (like me) who fall prey to his image. To date, his largest poker tournament victory was a $2000 buy-in tournament at the Bellagio, earning over $200,000.

My first encounter with Dan Alspach at the poker tables happened during the 2005 WPT Paris event, he was moved two seats to my left in a €1000 Pot Limit Hold'em tournament. It was lucky I had my sunglasses on that night, or I may have been blinded by Dan Alspach's shirt. At the time it was surprising to hear him constantly complain about the unplayable cards he was dealt, later I realized this was pure acting, setting up his image for later. Alspach played way too tight, involved in less than 10% of hands in the tournament and was knocked out early. A few days afterwards I was playing in a $2-5 No Limit Hold'em game, Dan Alspach was also playing, this time with a bright orange shirt and visor. He was playing slightly looser than before but not overly reckless. I flopped top two pair on a friendly board and called Alspach's bet on the flop. The turn went check-check. On the river, Alspach pushed out a huge over bet which I foolishly (with hindsight) called. He very smugly showed 8 2 off suit for a 5-high straight.
